- Fez has long been home to the largest and oldest Jewish community in Morocco, which has existed since the city was founded by the Idrisids (8th-9th centuries). They lived in many parts of the city together with the Muslim population.
- In the 13th century, a Jewish quarter appeared in Fez. At first the district was known as Hims, and also under the name Mellach because of the source of the salt water in the area or a former salt warehouse. The second name was later saved as the name of the Jewish quarter.
- It was the first Mallach in Morocco; the name and phenomenon that was later repeated in many other cities such as Marrakech.
